Venue

The conference will take place on the historic campus of the University of Tartu in the heart of Estonia’s second-largest city, Tartu. The University of Tartu is one of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe, founded by the Swedish king Gustavus Adolphus in 1632.

The conference venue is a short walk from most hotels and the bus station. The main conference venue is the Institute of Education (Jakobi 5). Free Wi-Fi (network name: ut-public) is available in all conference rooms.

Our banquet, on the 15th of August, takes place in a unique place – in Lodjakoda (Barge centre) Shipbuilding Hall, just a 15-minute walk from the city centre along the beautiful alley on the banks of the river.

Tartu, the city of good thoughts

The city of Tartu is a charming university town whose relaxed and sophisticated atmosphere creates a perfect environment for scholarly conversations. Tartu’s centre is small enough to cover on foot, so pack your comfortable walking shoes.

Tartu offers many delightful options for those embarking on their morning ventures in search of charming cafeterias. Mandel, Toome Kohvik, Käkk, and Werner. Additionally, Pierre stands out for its remarkable breakfast offerings, allowing patrons to indulge amidst the bustling ambience of the main square. If you want to do a little adventure (30 min), the cutest  breakfast-place  award goes to Karlova Kohv (house-roasted coffee + one porridge).

In the evening, Tartu’s vibrant culinary scene comes to life, particularly on summer nights when the city is buzzing. The options are varied and enticing, from Italian delights at Pompeii or La Dolce Vita to the savory offerings of München for German cuisine. Crêpp and Pierre cater to those with a penchant for French fare, while the Michelin guide recommends Hõlm and Joyce for the discerning palate. If you are looking for a lighter snack and have a small group to share, I recommend Vint Veinibaar ja Tapas, where you can find, as the name says, Tapas and Wine. On the riverside is a restaurant called Toko, which is by great coincidence hosting The longest dinner in Tartu next to Emajõgi, the time of our conference first evening, 14.08 (tickets). If you are looking for a lighter snack and have a small group to share, I recommend Vint Veinibaar ja Tapas, where you can find, as the name says, Tapas and Wine. If you like some industrial vibe, then in Aparaaditehas (Widget factory) you could find Kolm Tilli, offers street cuisine like Napoli style pizza and it also has some really good vegetarian food options.

As Tartu is a university city, there are many cool bars for younger and older academic folks to gather. Barlova is a cosy community bar populated by colourful locals, free concerts, a large selection of local craft beers, and the best Italian coffee. Ula Bar is a hidden gem on the edge of Toome Hill, with a beautiful yard area.

Can you imagine, all those options above were within a 15-minute walking radius of a centre, but if you prefer to move on wheels, then look up Tartu Smart bike.
